Okay, it’s February. Open enrollments periods for Medicare and ACA product have long since closed. The bloom is off the rose of most New Year’s resolutions. And Valentine’s Day is more of a made-up holiday to sell flowers and greeting cards than insurance. So what does a well-qualified, filled-with-good intentions agent do?
One of the oldest adages in the insurance business (or in part of life, particularly any sales arena) is “Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan”, or the variant “Most don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan”. This is very true, for as the Rabbit told Alice in Lewis Carroll’s classic:
“Cat: Where are you going?
Alice: Which way should I go?
Cat: That depends on where you are going.
Alice: I don’t know.
Cat: Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.”
That’s the basis for most rudimentary of plans, but I’d go even a step farther. Many have taken that first step and worked up a plan, then decide to intently study the map, make certain the car could start, that it is washed, oil changed, and full of gas. They don’t start it and go. That’s the startling recommendation here, paraphrasing Nike – “Just Do It.”
You have your course mapped, and have your plan. You have studied the map (certified), made certain the car can start (licensed and contracted), did the maintenance (worked up your diversified marketing program). Now, “Just Do It.”
In an article filled with adages, consider this one – “When all is said and done, more is said than done.” Whatever we determine we need to do, and however we plan to do it, it is nothing until we engage and continue to drive forward consistently. We’ll get there if we actually head out and move to get there.
